My Journey into Therapy
My journey to becoming a therapist wasn’t a straight path, and I can honestly say I understand what it feels like to reach a point where you’re just not coping—whether in work or life. In my 40s, I found myself experiencing burnout. I was in a high-pressure HR role, stepping up to deputise for the HR Director, dealing with costs cutting, and leading change management projects. It was demanding, and the work-life balance was out of sync.
Around the same time, my father was diagnosed with dementia. I was living in Yorkshire, and he was in Kent, so I found myself travelling back and forth every week to care for him. Eventually, the strain took its toll. I became depressed and thought I could handle everything on my own—but I couldn’t. I didn’t seek help immediately, thinking I should be able to cope, but eventually, I turned to therapy.
That was the turning point. Therapy helped me process my own struggles, regain my sense of self, and move towards a more fulfilling life. It led me to leave HR, care for my father full-time, and eventually pursue my Post Graduate Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy. This shift gave me a deeper understanding of the challenges many working professionals and carers face.
My Approach to Therapy
I know how hard it can be to reach out for help. I’ve been in that chair, unsure of what to say, how to start, or whether I was “doing it right.” I can tell you now, there’s no right or wrong way to approach therapy. It’s about creating a space where you feel heard and supported—at your own pace.
I tend to take a conversational approach—we’ll talk through your concerns in a relaxed way. I’m not here to judge, and you can express yourself however feels natural to you. There’s no need to apologise for swearing, getting emotional, or feeling vulnerable—this is your space. My job is to help you feel comfortable, safe, and understood, and to guide you through the work that’s right for you.
Change is difficult, and it takes time. But I believe positive change is always possible. Whether it's learning to accept and understand yourself better or exploring new ways to move forward, I’m here to support you every step of the way. The biggest shift often comes from simply gaining clarity and compassion for yourself.
Why I Do This Work
In addition to my formal training, my life experiences—burnout, caring for a parent, and navigating career transitions—give me a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those juggling personal and professional stress. I know the weight of high expectations—whether it's in the workplace or from family, and how important it is to take time for yourself.
I’m especially passionate about helping working professionals, those facing career-related stress, and carers who feel overwhelmed and need support to process their emotions, find a work-life balance, and reconnect with themselves.
What You Can Expect
When we start working together, we’ll talk through your goals, but I’ll always let you lead the way. We’ll go at a pace that feels right for you. I know therapy can feel strange at first, so there’s no pressure to “get it right.” We’ll work together, and I’ll be with you every step of the way.
I offer therapy both online and in-person in Skipton, and whether we meet face-to-face or online, I’m committed to creating a safe, respectful space for you to explore whatever you need. There’s no rush—each session will be built around your needs, and I’ll always check in to see how you’re feeling.
